Description

This object, also known as LBN 717, is a tiny HII region located about 24000 light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +51 degrees. It is one of the furthest Sharpless images from us. This nebula spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 18 light years.

The ionizing star cluster at center is [BDS2003] 66. The dark clouds of Barnard 20 surround the nebula. I like the crisply defined gas front arcs which frame the nebula top and bottom.

This object is the 211th entry in the Sharpless catalog. This catalog, published in 1959 by Stewart Sharpless of the United States Naval Observatory, identifies 313 ionized gas cloud HII regions north of -27 degrees declination.
